Manchester United using Cristiano Ronaldo tactic with new signing Donny van de Beek

Manchester United are trying to beef up Donny van de Beek in a similar way to what they did with Cristiano Ronaldo when he made the switch to Old Trafford. The Holland international joined from Ajax in the summer but has yet to start a Premier League match for his new side.

United have been impressed with the fitness of Van de Beek since he made the switch.

But the club think the Dutchman should add some muscle to be perfectly suited for the added physicality in the Premier League.

This isn’t the first time United have employed the same strategy with new signings.

The Sun claim they did the same with Ronaldo and January recruit Bruno Fernandes more recently.

Van de Beek has been likened to David Beckham with his superb attitude towards training, according to the report.

The 23-year-old could start his first Premier League game on Saturday against Newcastle.

So far Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has only blooded him from the start in the Carabao Cup.

Van de Beek’s agent, Sjaak Swart, admitted that he is not pleased with the amount of playing time his client has got so far.

“A substitute, I don’t like it at all,” he said after United’s 3-2 win over Brighton last month.

“I couldn’t do it myself, substituting in with four minutes left to play. Then you’d better let me sit down.”

He added: “I have to say he [Van de Beek] did three more good things. The penalty, where the winning goal came from, came from him.

“But normally they should have lost 1-7. Five times post and bar, Brighton … They have a nice team, but that shouldn’t happen to Manchester United.”

United have a number of decisions to make ahead of the Newcastle match on Saturday.

Anthony Martial is suspended and Edinson Cavani unavailable due to quarantine rules which means Mason Greenwood, Marcus Rashford or Odion Ighalo will lead the attack.

The form of Harry Maguire is also a concern after he was sent off for England against Denmark last night.

And Alex Telles could make his debut at left-back in place of Luke Shaw.

United take on Newcastle at 8pm on Saturday but fans will have to pay £14.95 to watch the match on Sky Sports Box Office.
