Manchester United told they should have Youri Tielemans regret over Donny van de Beek deal

Man Utd: Solskjaer assesses van de Beek performance

Manchester United should have pursued a deal for Youri Tielemans 12 months before they signed Donny van de Beek, according to former Aston Villa striker Tony Cascarino. Van de Beek joined United from Ajax last summer for a fee of around £40million. However, the Holland international has struggled to make an impact at Old Trafford, having made just two Premier League starts.

Tielemans, meanwhile, has become an integral member of Brendan Rodgers’ midfield at Leicester City.

The Belgian initially joined the Foxes on loan from Monaco in January 2019 before making the deal permanent in July that year for a similar fee to Van de Beek.

Cascarino says it was a big coup for Leicester to sign Tielemans but says United should have gone after him following his impressive loan at the King Power.

“Take Tielemans, who was on loan at Leicester, he played really well for them when he was on loan,” Cascarino said on talkSPORT.

“And you look at a club like Man United who have ended up going and buying Van de Beek, taking him from Ajax.

“Yet Tielemans was available, Leicester got that deal, signed him up permanently, and that was a big coup because he’s a really good player.

“Alongside [Wilfred] Ndidi, the pair of them have a bit of everything. You do wonder why no one stole Tielemans off of Leicester.

“They knew the fee, they knew the player, they watched him play in the Premier League, yet Leicester got that deal tied up and got him into their football club on a permanent basis.

“I thought that they were going to have a lot of problems getting him.

“I thought other big clubs were going to come after him and maybe snatch him off Leicester. Fair play to Leicester.”

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer recently spoke about Van de Beek’s start to life at the club.

And the Norwegian says it is normal for a player to take time to settle in a new league.

“I’ve answered this question so many times,” Solskjaer said.

“There are so many examples of players needing a little bit of time, quality players. We have many examples ourselves and there are other clubs with examples. Sometimes it takes time.

“You don’t expect people who care for him to be quiet at times, especially when they want the best for them.

“I’ve spoken to him and reiterated and made him aware of how much we rate him.”
