Manchester United held internal talks about signing Saul Niguez as recently as this morning, it has been claimed. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants to land another midfielder before the summer transfer window closes on August 31. And though Chelsea are also keen on the Atletico Madrid star, a move to Old Trafford could beckon.
United are pushing to bolster their midfield, especially after Sunday’s disappointing 1-1 draw with Southampton.
Though Solskjaer is well-stocked at the current moment in time, the Red Devils boss knows more is required if his side are to win the Premier League title.
United have been linked with Ruben Neves and Eduardo Camavinga, of Wolves and Rennes respectively.
But talk of Saul potentially moving has gathered pace over the past 24 hours, with Atletico looking to cash in on the Spain international.
And journalist Jonathan Shrager has claimed United discussed a deal for Saul earlier this morning, with interest ‘genuine’.

“Regarding Ñíguez to #MUFC, I know that the player was discussed by people at United as recently as this morning,” he said on Twitter.
“So the interest is genuine.
“And there is currently an open dialogue between United and Saúl’s representatives.”
United know they require an upgrade on Fred, who has struggled for consistency ever since moving to the club back in 2018.
And they’re also aware that Nemanja Matic can’t go on forever, with the Serbia international entering the twilight years of his career.

Donny van de Beek, too, has failed to live up to expectations since his move from Ajax 12 months ago.
And it seems as though United are hoping to sign Saul as a result, with the Atletico star open to leaving La Liga behind.
The Red Devils aren’t alone in pursuing the 26-year-old, however.
Chelsea are also admirers of the Spain international and, not content with landing Romelu Lukaku, Thomas Tuchel is targeting a deal.
Solskjaer was recently coy on Saul, saying before the weekend’s draw with Southampton that any more signings would be a ‘bonus’ for his side.
“Anything from now is a bonus,” said the 48-year-old.
“I have to say that with the two signings we’ve got, we’ve strengthened where we wanted to strengthen.
“Let’s see what happens. You never know in football. Anything can happen, ins and outs.”
And former United star Rio Ferdinand recently claimed his old side should be targeting Saul or West Ham midfielder Declan Rice.
“I think if the right player becomes available for the right price, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will go and get him,” Ferdinand told his FIVE YouTube channel.
“The problem is who is out there and who could be a good fit? Saul Niguez would be a perfect fit and he’s asking price was £160m a couple of years ago, now it’s more like £40-50m.
“In today’s game that’s a decent price for someone like him who has Champions League experience.
“I’m a big fan of his. If you can get him in this window, I think you do it.
“I think Declan Rice would be a massive addition to this squad. I’m a massive fan of his. I would love to see him keep progressing.
“He was brilliant for England in the summer. I think if West Ham keep him they’ve done unbelievably well. I think he does well staying at West Ham or if he goes.”
