  • Manchester City 1-3 Lyon: Guardiola’s men DUMPED out of Champions League

Substitute Moussa Dembele struck twice as Lyon stunned Manchester City with a 3-1 victory on Saturday to move into the semi-finals of the Champions League where they will face Bayern Munich.

Lyon took the lead in the 24th minute with a fine finish from Maxwel Cornet but City drew level through a Kevin De Bruyne side-foot finish in the 69th minute.

Dembele broke free and Ederson’s outstretched leg couldn’t keep his shot out of the net to make it 2-1 and the striker pounced for his second in 87th minute.

Sportsmail’s Jack Gaughan rated the players.

Lyon stunned Manchester City to move into the semi-finals of the Champions League

Ederson – 5.5

Can’t really fault him for the first goal but a calamitous error for Lyon’s third.

Fernandinho – 4.5

Booked early on and that hindered him thereafter. Drawn out into unfamiliar areas.

Eric Garcia – 5

Caught by a run in behind for Lyon’s first goal. Never seemed particularly comfortable.

Aymeric Laporte – 4.5

Looked a spare part on the left of a back three and made an unusual number of mistakes.

Aymeric Laporte struggled after Pep Guardiola tweaked the formation to match his opponents

Rodri – 5

Not incisive enough in possession. City needed him to really force the issue as they stagnated.

Kyle Walker – 6

Could not get any change out of the very impressive Maxwell Cornet. No chance to affect the game.

Kevin De Bruyne – 7

Mirrored performances of earlier in the campaign: seemed the man to bail out a dreadful City.

Ilkay Gundogan – 6

Not his fault but City needed more aggressive running from midfield and Gundogan doesn’t provide that.

Midfielder Kevin De Bruyne was a constant threat and scored a wonderful equaliser

Joao Cancelo – 6.5

More progressive then Walker on the other flank. One of very few who had a positive evening.

Raheem Sterling – 6

The most likely in a City shirt to make something happen but a horrendous miss late on.

Gabriel Jesus – 6.5

Very quiet until he started finding a bit of space and drawing fouls around the box.

Riyad Mahrez (for Fernandinho, 56) – 7

David Silva (for Rodri, 84)

LYON (3-5-2)

Anthony Lopes – 6.5

City created little before half-time but Lopes retained his concentration admirably.

Jason Denayer – 7

A largely calm display. Couldn’t cope with Sterling initially but became stronger.

Marcelo – 6.5

Marshalled the back three nicely, although started giving away daft fouls as the game went on.

Fernando Marcal – 7.5

Dangerous at set pieces and stood up to City’s running from deep. Stayed narrow.

Impressive Maxwel Cornet was a big influence for the French side on Saturday night

Leo Dubois – 6

Tough assignment up against Cancelo marauding forward and doubled up with Denayer.

Maxence Caqueret – 7.5

Barely wasted a pass, a harrier in midfield and capable of breaking forward to cause problems.

Bruno Guimaraes – 7

Only his eighth appearance for Lyon but appeared at home, often sweeping up.

Houssem Aouar – 7

Developing into some midfielder. Particularly adept at spotting troubling pockets to exploit.

Disciplined Memphis Depay dropped in between the lines to help out the Lyon midfield

Maxwel Cornet – 8

Has a knock of scoring against City and a wonderful finish for the opener. Defended well.

Memphis Depay – 6

Not an explosive display. Drifted away from his marker to link with midfield as Lyon broke.

Karl Toko Ekambi – 7.5

Physical presence, excellent movement and occupied the centre halves when leading the line.

Thiago Mendes (for Guimaraes, 70) – 6

Kenny Tete (for Dubois, 74) – 6

Moussa Dembele (for Depay, 75) – 7.5

Jeff Reine-Adelaide (for Ekambi, 87)

Referee: Danny Makkelie (NED) – 5
