Man Utd were given perfect transfer solution in France game against Croatia

Manchester United made it clear back in January that signing a striker was a top priority for the club as they ended up bringing in Odion Ighalo on loan, but their need to sign a forward may not be so desperate now. United sold Romelu Lukaku last summer with the club failing to bring in a replacement.

Instead, Anthony Martial was given the chance to play through the middle.

Previously, the Frenchman had shown glimpses of his potential as a striker but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer put faith in Martial to become United’s go-to option.

Still, despite a strong start to the season, United made it clear they wanted to sign a top striker with their interest in Erling Haaland.

United pulled out of negotiations due to financial reasons around a deal, although Haaland was available for just £17million.

The 24-year-old is coming off his best season at Old Trafford, having scored 17 goals in just 32 Premier League games.

And he’s clearly taken that form into the new campaign if his performance in France’s 4-2 win over Croatia is anything to go by – his first start for his country since March 2018.

Martial played a key role in the Nations League win, setting up Antoine Griezmann with a sublime assist before finding the net before half-time.

And Martial’s transformation has been noted by France head coach Didier Deschamps.

“I wouldn’t say that he has undergone a metamorphosis, but he has changed,” he said.

“I have noticed off the pitch as well.

“He is capable of making a difference, very solid. He is on the right track.”

United will still likely need to sign a striker with Ighalo leaving midway through the season, but Martial’s latest performance suggests the club may not need to break the bank for an elite-level frontman as they have one already.
