Manchester United have been dealt a transfer blow with people in Germany are “convinced” Jude Bellingham will join Borussia Dortmund instead. United remain interested in signing Bellingham after having bids rejected for him in January. The 16-year-old has attracted interest from some of Europe’s top clubs after starring for Birmingham City in the Championship this season.
United tried to convince Bellingham they were the ideal destination for him last month when he was shown around the club’s Carrington training ground.
However, it appears some believe a move to Dortmund is on the cards.
Sky Sports reporter Kaveh Solhekol says Bellingham could follow in the footsteps of Jadon Sancho, who joined Dortmund from Manchester City aged 17 and has become a star for both the Bundesliga club and England.
Solhekol told the Transfer Talk podcast: “Now, speaking to people in Germany, they are convinced that he is going to join Borussia Dortmund, he’s going to follow in the footsteps of players like Jadon Sancho because young English players have seen what moving to Germany can do for your career.

“So that is what people in Germany are telling me but then again, my information is he hasn’t made up his mind yet and Manchester United and Chelsea are definitely options for him.”
Solhekol has one warning for potential admirers of Bellingham though, claiming it is not always possible to be convinced a 16-year-old will make it at the top level.
“Just one small caveat, I know people are saying he’s only 16, you don’t know what kind of player he’s going to develop into,” he added.
“For instance, you remember John Bostock at Crystal Palace, everybody thought he was going to be the next big thing in football.

“Looking back he probably moved to Spurs too early and although he’s still playing I think, he didn’t have the impact that maybe a lot of people thought he should have had in the game.
“So you just have to bare that in mind when we’re talking about transfers fees of £30m-£40m-£50m for a 16-year-old.
“Because of what’s happened in the world, I think those figures are going to have to be dialled down a little bit when the transfer window opens.
“But obviously Birmingham need the money, he will be leaving Birmingham when the transfer window opens.
“From what little I’ve seen of him, he does everything it takes to make it really, really big in the game.”
