Man Utd team news: Expected line-up vs Newcastle – Cavani out, Greenwood decision

Manchester United return to Premier League action at Newcastle on Saturday but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will have to decide who he wants to play as his main striker. Anthony Martial is suspended and Edinson Cavani is unavailable due to quarantine restrictions.

The Red Devils will look to bounce back following their 6-1 demolition at the hands of Tottenham before the international break.

Solskjaer will have a decision to make as to who starts in attack.

Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood and Odion Ighalo are the three possibilities with Martial and Cavani unavailable.

It would seem to make sense that Greenwood is moved to play in his natural position with either Daniel James or Juan Mata playing from the right against the Magpies.

One other possible change would be Donny van de Beek coming into the midfield.

That could mean Paul Pogba is dropped after an inconsistent start to the season in which United have faltered.

They lost to Crystal Palace in their Premier League opener before scraping past Brighton and then being thrashed by Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham.

Another question mark surrounds the centre of defence where Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof have both struggled.

Eric Bailly seemed to tweak his hamstring on international duty despite suggesting he is fine on social media afterwards.

That could mean United have to persist with Maguire and Lindelof against Newcastle.

There could be a boost in the backline though with new left-back Alex Telles possibly set to make his debut.

Don’t be surprised if Luke Shaw starts as he has not been on international duty while Telles has with Brazil.

David De Gea should continue in goal ahead of Dean Henderson while Nemanja Matic and Bruno Fernandes should feature as well.

Other options Solskjaer may consider include Scott McTominay or Fred but it seems most likely that Van de Beek will come in from the start for the first time.

Meanwhile, Rashford has insisted his charity work is having no impact on his performances so far this season.

“For me, no,” Rashford said.

“I have a team that works behind me and we make sure we’re all on the same page. A lot of the work is done months in advance and I think it’s important for me to keep doing that. It’s the only way for me to keep on top of it. Like you said, there’s a lot going on.”

“At the moment, I feel in a good head space and I’m comfortable doing the two things. I feel ready to train every day and play the games.

“If it was taking a toll, I’d have to look at a different way of doing things – find a way to support the kids and make sure my football career goes in the right direction.”
