Manchester United have been hit by a transfer blow with reports stating that Manchester City have ‘earmarked’ funds for a move for Nuno Mendes. The 18-year-old has starred at left winger for Sporting Lisbon this season and emerged as a target for United.
Mendes made 29 appearances for Rúben Amorim’s side as they won their first Portuguese league title for 19 years.
He also earned a call-up to the Portugal international squad in an impressive first full season in senior football.
Though mainly played on the wing by Amorim this term, the Sporting star also has the ability to play at left-back.
That attracted the eye of the Red Devils, who are searching for competition for Luke Shaw in the upcoming summer window.

Shaw has enjoyed a resurgent campaign, but United would like to upgrade on the quality of the department.
That saw them target Mendes, with his agent, whom he shares with Bruno Fernandes, recently flying out to Manchester to gauge interest in the player.
But City also have an interest in the 18-year-old, with Pep Guardiola also requiring an upgrade at left-back.
Guardiola’s side appear to be in the driving seat for a move, with Sporting refusing to sell for a fee less than Mendes’ £60.25million buy-out clause.

It seems that City will be willing to meet that price, with A Bola reporting that the Premier League champions have “earmarked” a fee of £60million for the Portuguese international.
That is claimed to have put them at an advantage in the race to sign Mendes, with a number of European clubs eyeing a move for him.
It seems that Mendes has become one of Guardiola’s top targets as he looks to overhaul his squad for next season.
It is also stated that City have an “established protocol” with Sporting which sees players move between the two clubs.
City are reported to hope to use that relationship to their advantage in order to complete a deal this summer.
But there is strong interest from a number of other clubs, with A Bola stating that Mendes is being “closely followed” by top sides in Spain and Italy.
City will certainly need the £60m they have set aside for a deal, with Mendes’ contract running until the summer of 2025.
Despite putting that money aside though, City fans may have to wait for confirmation of a deal, with his future only being decided after Euro 2020.
