Manchester United need to build on Tuesday night’s win over Villarreal and continue keeping clean sheets if they are to turn their season around, believes Harry Maguire. United beat Villarreal 2-0 thanks to goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho.
United are through to the knockout stages of the Champions League after beating the Yellow Submarine.
They were made to wait until late in the tie after a cagey hour of football in Spain, but Ronaldo latched onto a defensive error to give United the lead through a cute lob.
Then, in the dying moments, Sancho drilled into the top corner of the net to give the Red Devils the win.
It’s been a tough 48 hours for the Red Devils, who were embarrassed by Watford on Saturday – with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer paying the price with his job.
Now, United will look to build on the win, and speaking afterwards Maguire insisted the side need to continue to be defensive-minded.
“It’s massive for our season we knew going into the game knowing the last few months haven’t been good enough and we knew we needed a result for our season and fans we know how tough it’s been and we need to make sure that’s a start,” he told BT Sport.
“It wasn’t pretty first half especially tough, tight two teams going for it but knew they couldn’t lose the game as well so it was important to stay in the game.
“I thought the lads that came off the bench helped us push on and I thought the second half performance was really good.
“I think the emphasis was on getting a result we know how coming away from home in Europe is you got to set up solid and not give away goals i thought we did that really well and like I said second half we controlled the game especially after the 60th minutes and we probably got what we deserved with the amount of chances we created.
“Ronaldo has been brilliant he scored and that’s what he does throughout his career and that’s why we need to get back to being solid and back to clean sheets because we know that if we keep a clean sheet we have more than opportunity to win the game with him up front.
“As a Man United team we want to be on the front foot and aggressive and play at a high tempo.
“The first half we played with a bit too much edgy and played with too much fear but we were solid without putting in enough pressure on those on the ball. We spoke about that at half-time and the first goal came from that. Like I said it must be a start and we need to keep pushing.”
