When Manchester United signed Edinson Cavani, the initial reaction was one of trepidation. Would he be another Angel Di Maria, Alexis Sanchez or Memphis Depay? However, the Uruguay international has silenced his critics – and now put the flops to shame.

Manchester United signed Cavani on transfer deadline day.

They had initially been hoping to land Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund, having spent all summer haggling with the Bundesliga side.

But United, after being priced out of a deal for the England international, then swooped for Cavani instead.

In the aftermath, there were suggestions he’d be another Di Maria, Sanchez or Depay.

All three players arrived with big expectations and were handed the No 7 shirt upon touching down from Real Madrid, Arsenal and PSV Eindhoven respectively.

But Cavani has now put the trio to shame, especially after scoring a sensational lob in the club’s 1-1 draw with Fulham at Old Trafford on Monday night.

The Uruguay international has now scored 16 goals across all competitions, with only Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes finding the net more.

And he’s now matched the goal totals of Di Maria, Sanchez and Depay put together.

United had massive hopes for the former when they snapped him up from Real Madrid back in the summer transfer window of 2014, paying £60million to get him in the door.

That made the Argentina international the Premier League’s costliest recruit at the time and Louis van Gaal, at the player’s unveiling, was thrilled.

But Di Maria was a flop, instead of a hit.

The current Paris Saint-Germain star scored just four goals during his sole season in English football and, after 12 months, decided to pack his bags and depart.

Afterwards, United then jumped to beat the likes of Liverpool and PSG to Depay’s signature.

The Dutchman had been in electric form for PSV Eindhoven, scoring 28 goals from 40 appearances during his final season at the club.

Depay initially took to life at his new club, scoring a wonderful brace during a Champions League qualifying victory over Club Brugge.

But things, again, didn’t work out.

Depay toiled for 18 months before being sold by Jose Mourinho, having fallen behind the likes of Wayne Rooney, Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the pecking order.

United kept the No 7 shirt vacant in the aftermath, waiting for the right occupant to come along.

And when they signed Sanchez from Arsenal in the January transfer window of 2018, they were convinced they’d found the right person.

Except that wasn’t the case.

Sanchez, on massive wages of £400,000-a-week, scored just five goals for United during a miserable 18 month spell.

And, when he was finally sold to Inter Milan back in the summer, the Red Devils were the happiest party of all.

Cavani faced unfair comparisons with the trio upon touching down.

But he’s now put both his critics and the aforementioned trio to shame by matching their goal tally in just a single season.

Whether he can fire the club to Europa League glory before the campaign ends, however, is something only time will tell.
