Manchester United are still in the running for Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland which could prove problematic for Cristiano Ronaldo, causing a dramatic U-turn for the five-time Ballon d’Or winner.

New interim boss Ralf Rangnick has got Manchester United firing once more, and the Red Devils are unbeaten since the German replaced Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Rangnick has been tinkering with his starting eleven since arriving at Old Trafford, and even instilled his famous gegenpress style into United’s gameplan.

The next step for Rangnick is to make some new signings to fit his style of play and help the future manager of the club who is expected to be appointed at the end of the season.

Unsurprisingly, Erling Haaland has emerged as a perfect option for United going forward, but it could cause Cristiano Ronaldo to make a U-turn.

The footballing world was shocked not once but twice this summer as Lionel Messi departed Barcelona for Paris Saint Germain, and of course the two are never far apart in the same conversation, as Ronaldo returned to United later that window.

The 36-year-old has been on fire too, scoring 14 goals in the Premier League and Champions League since arriving for his second stint at Old Trafford.

Although the five-time Ballon d’Or winner hitting the ground running in trademark style, it wasn’t the dream return for Ronaldo, and the club were in turmoil until Solskjaer was sacked, but despite this the Portuguese star remains happy according to his agent.

There were claims that Ronaldo was already unhappy back at United, but these have been squashed by his agent, Jorge Mendes said: “Cristiano Ronaldo is very happy at Man United.

“He’s gonna continue with his solid, great performances as always in his career. It’s gonna be a great season for him, I’m sure.”

So Ronaldo may be happy for now, but United run the risk of ruining that if they sign Haaland, who remains their primary target.

According to BILD, United are the only serious bidders for Haaland thus far, which comes as a surprise as the Norwegian is seemingly wanted by all of the top clubs in Europe.

This makes United the favourites to sign Haaland by default, but this could come at some cost as Ronaldo will certainly not be happy if he is not the main no.9 at Old Trafford.

Ronaldo may be 36, but the Portuguese star still wants to be the main man, and with his numbers, he makes a good case that he is still capable of leading the line for the near future.

But even Ronaldo is only human, and United cannot pass up an opportunity to sign Haaland should the chance present itself, meaning that Rangnick must risk a feud with the five-time Ballon d’Or winner.

Ronaldo has been partnering up top with Edinson Cavani this season, and the duo have enjoyed mixed success so far, but the prospect of the Portuguese star lining up with Haaland would seemingly be trouble for the rest of the league.

However, whether Ronaldo can handle not being the undisputed biggest star is yet to be seen, and only time will tell.
