Man Utd: Can the Red Devils challenge for the title?
As per usual, Manchester United currently find themselves at the centre of a significant amount of transfer speculation. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be looking to ease the pressure on his position at the club with one or two quality signings in the January transfer window, who can help inspire the Red Devils to another top-four finish at the end of the season. Express Sport rounds up all the latest news and rumours regarding United’s future transfer business.
Cristiano Ronaldo swap talk rubbished
United transfer chief Ed Woodward will not pursue a sensational swoop for Cristiano Ronaldo next month.
It was rumoured that the mercurial Portuguese forward, who graced the Old Trafford pitch for a number of years under Sir Alex Ferguson, could return to England in a swap deal with Paul Pogba going the other way to Juventus.
However, ESPN confirmed earlier this week that this is highly unlikely to become a reality despite the Old Lady’s willingness to clear Ronaldo’s huge salary from their books.
The report also claims that the Red Devils have tried and failed ‘on numerous occasions’ to tempt the 35-year-old back to Manchester, but ‘the stars have never quite aligned’.

Alaba and Upamecano interest shelved
United’s interest in defensive pair David Alaba and Dayot Upamecano has cooled significantly since the summer, according to The Telegraph.
It is claimed that although a number of top clubs including Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City are interested in signing Alaba, the Red Devils will look elsewhere in their search for a new centre-back.
The Austrian defender has been linked with a move away from Bayern Munich in recent weeks with United being one of the clubs initially thought to be keen on striking a January deal.
Meanwhile, Upamecano is no longer being considered as a priority target due to the fact that United have ‘reservations about his suitability for their needs’.
Sancho still wanted despite poor form
The report also claims that Jadon Sancho remains a top target for Solskjaer despite the English winger’s form for Borussia Dortmund during the current campaign.
The 20-year-old, who was heavily tipped to sign for United over the summer, is yet to score in the Bundesliga this season.
It is said that the Red Devils retain ‘a firm interest’ in Sancho, as they are fully aware that it is often normal for ‘the performances of young players to fluctuate’.
Dortmund rejected all of United’s advances in pre-season with the club failing to meet their nine-figure valuation of the winger.
