Manchester United have been mocked over the recent form of Angel Gomes.
The 20-year-old, who joined the Red Devils as a youngster before working his way up to the first-team, rejected the offer of a new contract and walked away from the club back in July.
After agreeing a five-year deal with Ligue 1 outfit Lille, Gomes was sent out on loan to Boavista in Portugal and has managed an impressive two goals and four assists in only four Liga Nos outings.
Rival fans have now joked that United will end up buying back their academy graduate for a mammoth £100m in 2022, poking fun at their deal to sign Paul Pogba from Juventus back in 2016.
One United supporter said in response: “Should have been playing a lot more football, might of signed an extension.”
With another adding: “Yeah it’s gonna happen. Always knew that kid had special talent he was only the academy player on the same level as Mason Greenwood.”
A third continued: “You guys who said Angel Gomes isn’t good enough will pay for your crimes and so will our board.”
With a fourth concluding: “Angel is so gifted. I’ll be shocked if he ever plays a game for Lille, I think someone else will sign him after this loan with Boavista.”
The club’s announcement over his future in July read: “Manchester United can confirm that Angel Gomes has not taken up the offer of a new contract and has, therefore, left the club.
“The 19-year-old joined the Reds at a very young age and worked his way through the ranks before becoming the first player born in the 2000s to represent the first team, as a substitute for Wayne Rooney in the final game of the 2016/17 season, against Crystal Palace.
“It meant he became the youngest player since Duncan Edwards to make his senior debut for the club, soon after being awarded the Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award.”
Before adding: “Everybody at Manchester United would like to wish Angel the very best of luck for the future and thank him for his efforts for the club.”
After Solskjaer said when asked if Gomes would stay: “I’ve got no news, nothing, so it doesn’t look like it.
“To be honest, I’ve not heard from them last night or this morning.
“So it seems like that they haven’t managed to agree, so the answer is probably short and yes then.”
