Man Utd identify Pau Torres as transfer target to fill ‘priority’ squad position

Manchester United have reportedly identified Villareal defender Pau Torres as a potential summer signing this year.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could be a busy man when the transfer window opens with reports suggesting he will focus on strengthening his defence.

Harry Maguire is a regular in the Red Devils back-line though there seems to be a want to upgrade on Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly.

And the Manchester Evening News report that United and rivals Manchester City are both interested in Spanish international Torres.

It’s claimed that Solskjaer is prioritising a defensive signing with United more likely than their rivals to make a move.

Torres has been capped seven times by Spain and the MEN add that he could be a viable alternative to United’s long-term dream addition Rapahel Varane.

The MEN add that other Premier League clubs are interested in Torres, 24, with Real Madrid and Bayern Munich also fans.

Solskjaer has often spoke about his defensive options and, having focused on strengthening his attack last summer, said: “For me, we’ve got enough good centre-backs here at the moment.

“When you concede chances and concede goals, there are two different things you can look at – it’s either the team shape, or are there any individual mistakes. “We’re not in our best shape of form, our shape isn’t there, we’re not sharp enough to stop crosses or follow the runs.

“We’re a little bit behind, that’s more structural mistakes than individual mistakes. I thought Victor [Lindelof] did well today.”
