Man Utd have three priorities as Ed Woodward eyes transfer action with month to go

Manchester United supremo Ed Woodward has already secured one signing in Donny van de Beek. The Netherlands international has moved to Old Trafford in a £40million transfer deal from Ajax. And he’d also like to recruit Jadon Sancho and Dayot Upamecano before the transfer window shuts on October 5, as well as getting several current players off the books.

Manchester United have seen their Premier League rivals strengthen around them, despite landing Van de Beek.

Chelsea have been the winners of the transfer window so far, with the Blues landing Hakim Ziyech, Timo Werner, Ben Chilwell, Malang Sarr, Thiago Silva and Kai Havertz so far.

Arsenal have also done well, recruiting Willian on a free from Chelsea and also securing the arrival of Gabriel Magalhaes from Lille.

And Tottenham have also strengthened by signing Joe Hart, Matt Doherty and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg as they look to build on their sixth-placed Premier League finish last time out.

For United, Van de Beek represents a step in the right direction. The 23-year-old is expected to slot into Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s midfield alongside Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba – something that’s exciting for supporters.

And Express Sport will now take a look at the club’s priorities with a month left to run.

Sign Jadon Sancho

Unless you’ve been living on the moon for the past few months – and that sounds appealing given the current state of the world – you’d know United want to sign Sancho.

Many thought they’d have a deal for the 20-year-old done by now but Borussia Dortmund have been stubborn in negotiations.

United have found dealing with the German giants via a third party extremely frustrating.

And, as things stand, Sancho’s wage demands and agent fees are posing a problem to the deal.

United remain hopeful this one will go through before the deadline, however, and have kept the No 7 shirt free deliberately.

Sign Dayot Upamecano

United have many centre-backs currently at their disposal.

Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof, Eric Bailly, Teden Mengi, Axel Tuanzebe, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo are all competing for a starting berth at the club.

But, despite that, Solskjaer wants one more.

And it’s Dayot Upamecano who has sparked interest, with the club eyeing a deal for the 21-year-old despite the fact he only recently signed a contract extension with RB Leipzig.

United may have to sell before they buy, however, and they may even wait another 12 months – though run the risk of competing with Europe’s elite for the centre-back if they do.

Sell to raise funds

Solskjaer has done well to trim the United squad since his replaced Jose Mourinho.

But the club need to be better at selling players – and would like to get rid of a few before the transfer window shuts.

Centre-back trio Jones, Smalling and Rojo have all been deemed surplus to requirements by the club.

They’re prepared to listen to offers for Andreas Pereira and Jesse Lingard, too.

And United would be unlikely to block an exit for Diogo Dalot, who has blown hot and cold ever since his move from Porto in 2018.
