The world’s most expensive defender, Harry Maguire, could soon have a £50m partner as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer continues to look to improve his squad. Eric Bailly, Axel Tuanzebe and Victor Lindelof are Solskjaer’s current options.

Manchester United have been handed a boost in their pursuit of a new defensive partner for Harry Maguire this summer.

The Red Devils are expected to splash the cash for a centre-back once again to go alongside Maguire, who is the world’s most expensive defender.

And they have had their eye on Sevilla’s Jules Kounde for some time now, following his rise in Spain.

The France U21 international has impressed in La Liga since leaving Bordeaux for around £21m.

Sevilla had previously slapped a £70m price tag on the 22-year-old’s head, amid interest last summer and in January.

But according to the Sun, Sevilla have lowered their asking price to somewhere around the £50m mark, making a deal a much more likely possibility.

Kounde is said to have been on the brink of a move to Manchester City last summer, but the deal fell through due to Nicolas Otamendi’s involvement.

Kounde has an £87.4m release clause in his contract, which runs until 2024, but Sevilla are understood to be open to a deal for significantly less.

The news comes as United have initiated talks with Nikola Milenkovic’s agent, Fali Ramadani, according to Calcio Mercato.

It is claimed that Fiorentina are ready to let their prized asset go for a fee of £30million, which is relatively cheap in today’s world.

Solskjaer is expected to ring the changes at back this summer, with the jury still out on the likes of Eric Bailly and Axel Tuanzebe, while Victor Lindelof has also had his fair share of hairy moments.

United have kept nine clean sheets in their last 13 matches.

But Solskjaer knows the quality of his side still needs vast improvement if they’re to close the gap on Manchester City next season.
