Man Utd and Liverpool accused of 'blackmail' in Thiago transfer negotiations

Former Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness has accused Manchester United and Liverpool of trying to ‘blackmail’ the German club by stalling in their efforts to sign Thiago Alcantara this summer.

The Spain international is expected to make the move to the Premier League after refusing to sign a new contract with Bayern.

The 29-year-old’s current contract is due to expire at the end of the season and he would then be available to leave on a free transfer.

Bayern are demanding a €30 million (£27m) transfer fee for Thiago, but neither United or Liverpool have submitted an offer, despite their strong intertest.

And Hoeness believes United and Liverpool are willing to wait until the closing stages of the transfer window, which ends on October 5, before making an official approach.

‘We offered him a great four-year contract but in the last minute he changed his mind and told us he wants a new challenge,’ Hoeness told Sport1.

‘He probably has an agreement with Liverpool or Manchester United, or with both.

‘Both clubs have not come to us with an offer.

‘They are bluffing and want to blackmail us by waiting until the last week and then make a cheap offer.

‘Bayern must decide whether they want to play this game or stand their ground and keep Thiago.’

Hoeness also branded David Alaba’s agent as a ‘greedy piranha’after the defender’s talks over a new contract with Bayern stalled.

‘David has a greedy piranha as an advisor,’ said Hoeness

‘His father, who I like very much, is also very influenced by him.’
