Manchester City will reportedly have the chance to offer Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi a pre-contract.
City were linked with a move for Messi over the summer after the Argentine had told Barca he wanted to leave the club.
In the end, he was persuaded to stay though his Nou Camp contract expires at the end of the current season.
City boss Pep Guardiola previously worked with Messi at Barcelona and is believed to be keen to do so again.
And The Telegraph claim that City will have the chance to talk with Messi over a potential move as early as January.
It’s believed that Messi’s future will be resolved later in the season following Josep Maria Bartomeu’s departure as president.
Messi has spent his whole senior career with Barcelona and shone at the Nou Camp, winning six Ballon d’Or titles.
City chief operating officer Omar Berrada recently opened up on the prospect of signing the current Barca captain.
“I think any club in the world would like to explore the possibility of him joining their team,” he said. "He's probably an exception to potential investments that we'd do.”
How Lionel Messi’s Barcelona future is set to be impacted by Josep Maria Bartomeu exit
Messi believed he could leave Barcelona in the recent summer for free due to a clause in his contract but the La Liga giants stood firm.
Explaining why he stayed with the Catalan side, Messi said: "I thought and was sure that I was free to leave, the president always said that at the end of the season I could decide if I stayed or not.

"Now they cling to the fact that I did not say it before June 10, when it turns out that on June 10 we were competing for La Liga in the middle of this awful coronavirus and this disease altered all the season.
"And this is the reason why I am going to continue in the club. Now I am going to continue in the club because the president told me that the only way to leave was to pay the €700 million (£624m) clause, and that this is impossible."
