Lukaku claims 23 out of 25 Inter Milan players showed covid-19 symptoms in 2019

Inter Milan striker Romelu Lukaku believes the majority of his team-mates have already been infected with coronavirus.

The Belgian believes all but two players in Inter’s 25-man squad displayed Covid-19 symptoms when they returned from their winter break in December.

Milan is the worst hit region of Italy and was the epicentre of the pandemic in February, when the country’s infection rate skyrocketed.

One of the most difficult aspects of the disease is that it can be passed from person to person through asymptomatic carriers, meaning it can be difficult to trace.

Many believe the disease was prevalent in Europe long before things escalated in early March and Lukaku believes a large number of his team-mates have already transmitted the disease.

‘We had a week off in December, we returned to work and I swear that 23 out of 25 players were ill. I am not kidding,’ said Lukaku.

‘We played against Radja Nainggolan’s Cagliari (on January 26) and after about 25 minutes, one of our defenders [Milan Skriniar] had to leave the pitch. He could not continue and almost fainted.’

‘Everyone was coughing and had a fever. When I was warming up, I felt a lot hotter than usual. I hadn’t suffered from a fever in years.

‘After the game there was a planned dinner with guests, but I thanked them and went straight to bed. We never did the COVID-19 tests at that moment, so we’ll never know for sure’.
