Liverpool have been urged to adopt the same tactic they used to sign Virgil van Dijk in an attempt to lure Jude Bellingham to Anfield. Former Reds star Danny Murphy can see his old club pulling off a deal for the England teenager.

Bellingham has long been linked with a move to Liverpool. The Borussia Dortmund star is widely expected to make a mega move this summer.

Real Madrid and Manchester City are among the other clubs interested in his signature. But Murphy believes Jurgen Klopp can tempt Bellingham with the same tactic he used to seal a deal for Van Dijk in January 2018.

He claims Van Dijk was told by Klopp he would be more remembered for his success at Liverpool compared to the likes of City. Murphy wrote in the Mail: “If [Declan] Rice has more than one Premier League suitor, Bellingham could have his pick of any club in Europe. What he’s achieved going to Borussia Dortmund at just 19 is outstanding.

“I’m sure Real Madrid would love him but I have a hunch he may prefer to return to England and be closer to the family. Jurgen Klopp told Virgil van Dijk he’d win titles at Manchester City but still be forgotten 10 years later whereas at Liverpool he’d be a legend forever.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if the same kind of sell may be used on Bellingham. Unlike Rice, he has experienced Champions League football so it might not be such a crushing blow if Liverpool don’t make it for one year.”

Earlier this week, it was claimed Liverpool are increasingly unlikely to sign Bellingham. Dortmund would demand a British record fee to allow him to leave the club this summer with two years still remaining on his contract.

Chelsea broke the record fee paid by a British club in January when they signed Enzo Fernandez from Benfica for around £107m. The Athletic claims there is significant doubt that the Liverpool owners FSG would be able to afford such a fee.

Liverpool legend Phil Thompson told Express Sport at Christmas that Bellingham should not purely follow the cash when deciding his next move, also comparing the situation to Van Dijk’s move five years ago.

However, Dortmund would unlikely accept a reduced fee just to accommodate the player’s wishes if he wanted to join Liverpool.
