Liverpool would have to make a ‘sensational’ offer to sign Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic in 2022, reports say. The Reds had a quiet summer transfer window, but could move to bolster Jurgen Klopp’s squad next year.

Ibrahima Konate was Liverpool’s only new addition over the summer, with the defender arriving in a £36million deal from RB Leipzig.

Liverpool instead focused on securing their current players on longer contracts, with Jordan Henderson, Virgil van Dijk, Alisson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Fabinho and Andy Robertson all renewing their terms in August.

Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane are the next players in line for new deals, with the attacking trio’s current contracts set to expire in June 2023.

However, Liverpool are likely to dip back into the transfer market in 2022, with Klopp’s squad potentially needing a refresh.

One of the areas they could look to strengthen is central midfield, given they lost Gini Wijnaldum on a free transfer in the summer.

The Reds have previously been linked with Lazio’s Milinkovic-Savic, who has impressed this season by registering three goals and two assists in eight Serie A games so far.

However, the Serbia international would not come cheap. According to Calciomercato, it would take a ‘sensational offer’ of around £67m (€80m) for Lazio to consider selling their star player.

This is not fresh news for Liverpool as the report states that the club were told of the Italian club’s stance over the summer.

Milinkovic-Savic’s price could be about to go up too, with his agent Mateja Kezman reportedly due to meet Lazio sporting director Igli Tare to discuss a new contract for the 26-year-old.

Milinkovic-Savic has racked up 50 goals and 40 assists in 257 appearances for the club over the past six years.

Liverpool are not the only side interested in the Serbian international either – Juventus ‘have not stopped thinking’ about him, according to the report, and they could move at the end of the season.

Inter Milan are another possible suitor given the club are managed by former Lazio boss Simone Inzaghi, who is a big fan of Milinkovic-Savic.

Lazio are fifth in Serie A, level on points with seven-placed Juventus, but 10 points behind leaders Napoli, who have won all eight of their matches so far.
