Liverpool set for Thiago Alcantara injury boost with return expected this month

Liverpool v Spurs: Premier League match preview

Liverpool are hoping to see midfielder Thiago Alcantara back in contention for a first-team spot before the turn of the year, according to reports. The Spaniard has not featured for the Reds since he was injured in October’s ill-tempered Merseyside derby draw at Goodison Park.

The 29-year-old made a big impression during his first few games for Liverpool, producing an outstanding performance in the early victory over Chelsea and showing similar levels of quality against Everton before he was rendered unable to continue when Richarlison clattered into his legs during the closing stages of the match.

He underwent a successful surgical procedure shortly after the incident and has been recovering ever since.

According to Sunday World, Jurgen Klopp’s side are expecting to welcome Thiago back at the end of the month, which will serve as a welcome boost amid the club’s current injury crisis.

Star defender Virgil van Dijk will be lucky to feature again this season having picked up a serious knee ligament injury against the Toffees, while Joe Gomez, Diogo Jota and Xherdan Shaqiri also face extended spells on the treatment table.

Klopp has highlighted the number of injuries in his squad on a number of occasions throughout the season, and praised the fringe and academy players who have stepped up to plug gaps left by his side’s high-profile absentees.

“We clearly had some problems injury wise, we lost top-class players to injuries and of course it’s one door closes and another opens up,” he said before the draw against Midtjylland earlier this month.

“You still need the right kids, the right players to use the chance. Without them we would have been lost, to be honest. Thank God it worked out.”

Liverpool face Tottenham in a potential early title decider on Wednesday evening, with the winners able to claim their spot at the summit of the Premier League table ahead of the busy festive period.

Spurs boss Jose Mourinho played down Klopp’s injury crisis in his pre-match press conference, claiming that the Reds manager’s only significant problem lies with the absence of Van Dijk.

“Every club has injuries now and again,” Mourinho told reporters. “Liverpool has a big injury, which is Van Dijk.

“I think Alisson is not injured. Alexander-Arnold is not injured. Matip, I believe that he’s going to play. Fabinho is not injured. Robertson is not injured. Henderson is not injured. Wijnaldum is not injured. Salah is not injured, Firmino is not injured, Mane is not injured.

“Van Dijk is injured and Van Dijk is a very good player of course. But give me Liverpool’s list of injuries and compare that list with what is the best Liverpool team,” he added.
