Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp snaps at journalist over Roberto Firmino question

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp looks set to keep his faith in Roberto Firmino for this weekend’s clash with Manchester City, snapping back at a question regarding the striker’s importance.

The Brazilian frontman has only netted one goal in 11 appearances in all competitions this season and his place in the team has come under huge pressure after Diogo Jota’s blistering start to life at Anfield.

Summer signing Jota replaced Firmino in the starting XI against Atalanta in the Champions League, playing as the central forward, and netted a superb hat-trick.

The former Wolves star now has seven goals in just 391 minutes of action across the Premier League and Champions League – a goal every 55 minutes.

While Klopp was full of praise for Jota’s recent displays, he refused to critique Firmino’s dwindling numbers in front of goal and reacted badly to a line of questioning about the out-of-form forward.

Asked to talk about the qualities that Firmino has shown in the past, Klopp seemed genuinely shocked by the question: ‘Bobby!? Who is with us, I don’t have to say about Bobby Firmino and how important he was for us.

‘So I don’t waste time with that. Who is not with us, I don’t care if they know about him, to be honest.

‘He was in so many games the difference-maker – without scoring maybe, but with scoring as well in other games.

‘So I would feel really embarrassed if I have to mention now the qualities of Bobby Firmino.’

When Klopp was pressed on the ‘hard facts’ behind Firmino’s lack of form, he shook his head and continued: ‘I can’t help these people. Sorry.

‘If they don’t see it, I cannot help them. That’s how it is.’

Liverpool travel to the Etihad Stadium on Sunday to take on Premier League title rivals Manchester City with Firmino expected to come back into the starting XI, having scored five times against them in the past – he has only netted more goals in his career against two other sides, Arsenal and Wolfsburg.
