Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp laughs at Thiago question and drops transfer hint

Jurgen Klopp couldn’t help but laugh when he was asked about Liverpool’s interest in Thiago Alcanatara. The Reds appear to be the frontrunners for the midfielder, who looks set to leave Bayern Munich this summer despite winning the treble with the Bavarians this season.

Thiago has just one year remaining on his current Bayern contract and has no plans to sign an extension.

Bayern are desperate to keep him at the Allianz Arena but have already accepted that he will leave the club this summer.

The Champions League winners do not want to lose the Spaniard on a free transfer next year and are therefore keen to sell up.

They had slapped an initial £31million price-tag on the midfielder but that has now been reduced to £25m.

Liverpool supporters were treated to a Thiago masterclass on Sunday in the Champions League final when the 29-year-old bossed proceedings against Paris Saint-Germain.

Reds boss Klopp has since been faced with further questions surrounding the club’s supposed interest in Thiago.

He burst into laughter before responding to Servus TV: “There are a lot of interesting players out there, but if someone is interesting for us I can´t say right now.

“Due to COVID you have to think 5 times about what you can and what you can´t do.

“We always have to pay attention to the finacial aspect. We don´t know how much money will come in.

“Nobody knows but it seems like some other teams have a more positive outlook on the future. If you take a look at Chelsea for example, yeah! [laughs]

“But I am very happy with my team right now. If something transfer related will happen we have to see.”

There has been some suggestion that Gini Wijnaldum could be set to leave Anfield should a deal for Thiago materialise.

The Dutchman has just one year remaining on his contract and is yet to sign an extension.

He has featured in both of Liverpool’s pre-season friendlies so far in Austria against Stuttgart and RB Salzburg and is expected to stay put this summer.

But beyond that, he is facing an uncertain future and there is some suggestion that Ronald Koeman would be interested in bringing him to Barcelona.

The clubs have been locked in talks for several months but there is still yet to be an agreement over a contract extension.
