Lionel Messi may have played final Barcelona game as PSG talk intensifies

Lionel Messi may well have played his final game for Barcelona with reports suggesting the club are yet to begin contract negotiations with the superstar.

Messi missed the final game of the season against Eibar though ends the campaign as La Liga's top scorer for the fifth year in a row.

His future was in doubt last summer with Messi sending a fax saying he wanted to exercise a clause in his contract.

The clause stated he could leave for free though it had expired and Barcelona said his £624m release clause would have to be met.

PSG and Manchester City were both interested in the 33-year-old, who is out of contract this summer.

French giants PSG remain interested in Messi, with Spanish football expert Guillem Balague saying: "He will have to decide if he wants to be in the club for a couple more seasons as a rebuild is taking place or if he wants to help PSG to win Champions League titles.

"Nobody can guess what he will decide at this point."

Messi had hinted that he could stay at the Nou Camp after helping Barcelona to the Copa del Rey title.

He called the success a "turning point" as he said: "The truth is that the recent Copa del Rey was special due to the period we were in, the club has gone a couple of years of not having a great time due to different results and titles.

"Because it is a very young dressing room, with a lot of people, and new people, and this Copa del Rey for the dressing room was a turning point, and very important."

He added: "Whenever I compete, I compete to win and try to achieve all the objectives, to get titles. Beyond that, I like to win and get titles. The more the better."
