Joan Laporta wants to be reunited with Pep Guardiola at Barcelona next summer if he becomes president.

Guardiola’s contract at Manchester City runs until 2021 and the Catalan has yet given no public indication of his future plans.

Laporta hopes to replace outgoing president Josep Bartomeu at the Nou Camp and then lure Guardiola back.

‘I would very much like Guardiola to come back, but now he is at City and it is a decision that Pep should take,’ the 57-year-old said.

‘He is a benchmark for Barcelona and many Catalans would like him to train Barca again.’

The news will be of significant interest to City, who realise Guardiola’s trophy-laden reign at the Etihad Stadium will not last forever and are tentatively looking at potential successors.

Guardiola had huge success during his time as Barcelona manager and many want him back

Laporta also cast doubt over Xavi’s suitability to take over at Barcelona so soon after retirement.

The ex-midfielder has been earmarked as a future boss and is thought to want City forward Raheem Sterling in his armoury should he be handed the opportunity to manage his boyhood club.

‘At the right time, I will speak to the person we think should be a Barca coach from 2021,’ Laporta added.

‘Xavi is already a coach, he lives football and it is he who must decide what his moment is.

‘In 2021 there will still be players who were Xavi’s team-mates, and he must think if he is prepared to lead former team-mates, which is not an easy thing.’
