Kyle Walker’s ploy to distract Fernandes’ Man Utd penalty backfires on City star

Kyle Walker's attempt to distract Bruno Fernandes while the Man United star was taking his penalty didn't go quite to plan – with the Portuguese star scoring to put United 1-0 up.

The Red Devils were awarded a spot-kick after just 50 seconds at the Etihad as Gabriel Jesus upended Anthony Martial inside the box.

Fernandes stepped up to take the penalty – his 19th of the season – and duly lashed it home beyond Ederson to give United a 1-0 lead early on in the contest.

The midfielder had to keep his focus during his run up and was forced to block out howls from Man City defender Walker, who tried in vain to distract the number 10.

Walker, who was on the substitute bench, shouted: "He's saved it!" as Fernandes approached the spot-kick. The defender's tactic didn't work as United took the lead.

£46.6million man Fernandes has been lethal from the spot ever since completing his move from Sporting Lisbon at the beginning of 2020. He has now scored 18 penalties for the club, 10 of which have come this season.

His strike at the Etihad is also the earliest City have conceded in a home league match at the ground since it first opened in 2003.

The goal should help relieve criticism on Fernandes, who came under-fire during the week for his poor record against the top-six.

Prior to the match at the Etihad, the 26-year-old had scored just once in seven league games against Liverpool, Manchester City, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea this season.
