Karim Benzema has stood by his comments suggesting Olivier Giroud isn’t of the same standard as himself.

Benzema used an unflattering analogy to describe the difference in quality between the two players while on an Instagram Q&A on Sunday evening.

Speaking to French actor and comedian Thomas N’Gijol, the Real Madrid star, when asked about the difference betweeen himself and the Chelsea striker, said: ‘You don’t confuse F1 with go karting. And I’m being kind. Next… and I know I’m F1.’

Seeking to clarify his comments on Monday, Benzema attempted to play down the situation by pointing to his words on Giroud’s impact in the France squad, but he refused to go back on his original statement.

‘I told the truth, it is that simple,’ Benzema said in an Instagram post. ‘What was not reported was what I said about what he brings to the France team.

‘What was picked up was that I said I was Formula 1 and he was karting. That is what I think, that is the truth.

Karim Benzema derided Olivier Giroud in an Instagram live video with actor Tomas N’Gijol

‘If you ask me in comparison to Ronaldo (Nazario): he is Formula 1 and I am karting, that is the truth!’

Benzema has not played for France since 2015, when Olivier Giroud was selected ahead of the former Lyon man.

He has not been back in the squad since, largely owing to his role in the sex-tape scandal that saw his one-time France team-mate Mathieu Valbuena blackmailed.

As a result Giroud has kept his place in the side and gone on to experience a great deal of success – reaching the Euro 2016 final before helping his side lift the World Cup in 2018.

Benzema implied that he performs like an F1 car whereas Giroud is a go kart
