Jose Mourinho has been warned about Gareth Bale ahead of his return to Tottenham.

The Wales talisman has made his name as one of the most successful British exports in history since joining Real Madrid back in 2013, winning two La Liga titles and lifting the Champions League four times.

Although the 31-year-old should go down as a club legend, he has been sidelined by Zinedine Zidane and booed by fans in a difficult end to his time in Spain.

Although he is set to return to the Premier League with his former club, his new manager might have been warned to proceed with caution by his former colleagues.

ESPN have reported that Mourinho has been urged to be careful when it comes to Bale at Spurs, in relation to a string of serious injuries over the past few seasons.

They add that the former Chelsea and Manchester United boss believes that Bale will be revitalised in north London, and that he could be involved against Southampton on Sunday.

When asked about he player this week, Mourinho said: "Gareth Bale is a Real Madrid player and I don't comment on players from other clubs.

"That is not my job to have contacts with agents. I don't want to comment on that."

Before adding when asked if he tried to sign Bale during his time at Old Trafford: "Even before that, I tried to sign him for Real Madrid which was not possible to do during my time there.

"But the president followed my instinct and my knowledge and the season I left he brought Gareth to the club.

“There is no secret on that. Even Gareth knows that. But I’m not going to speak about him anymore because he is a Real Madrid player."

In a chat with Sky Sports earlier this month, Bale said of a possible Premier League return: "If those options arise it is something I'd look at for sure.

"We'll see what happens, we have plenty of time in this transfer window and a couple of others as well. Time will tell but mainly I think the reason is that the decision is in Real Madrid's hands.

"I tried to leave last year but they blocked everything at the last second. It was a project I was excited for but it didn't materialise.

"There have been other instances where we have tried to go but the club won't allow it or they've done something. It's down to the club.”
