Jamie Carragher paid tribute to ‘outstanding’ N’Golo Kante after Chelsea beat Manchester City to win the Champions League.
Kante produced a Man of the Match performance in Porto on Saturday night as Thomas Tuchel’s side clinched a 1-0 win over Pep Guardiola’s Man City.
While Kai Havertz was the Chelsea hero – it was his first Champions League goal that fired the Blues to the title – Kante was equally as important in dominating the midfield and denying City an impressive treble.
Carragher raved about Kante following Chelsea’s triumph and said the French midfielder will go down as one of the ‘greatest players’ in Premier League history.
‘Before the game, we all got together and we all thought Manchester City might get the job done because they have the better team,’ Carragher told CBS Sports. ‘But he was the one Chelsea player we said would walk into the City side.
‘This is a guy who’s come to the Premier League and in his first season won the title with Leicester. He’s won the title with Chelsea too, and the FA Cup, a World Cup, and now a Champions League.
‘When he finishes, I think this guy will be spoken about as one of the greatest players or midfielders we’ve seen in the Premier League.
‘We speak about it as the Makelele role, I think we’ll start talking about it as the Kante role when he hangs his boots up. He was outstanding and rightly the man of the match.’
Former Manchester City star Micah Richards added: ‘He was sensational. He was everywhere on the pitch, he covered every blade of grass.
‘Look at his desire and work-rate. Every counter-attack City had, he just snuffed it out. He does the simple things really well. He was the start of the show time and time again.’
Mason Mount provided a brilliant assist for Havertz’s winning goal at the Estadio do Dragao and insisted it was a dream come true to help Chelsea win the Champions League for the second time in their history.
‘We are in a final and we won it. It’s such a special occasion. At this moment in time, we’re the best team in the world. You can’t take that away from us!’
