How Man Utd players ‘apologised’ in the dressing room after Istanbul defeat

Harry Maguire has revealed a number of Manchester United players “held their hands up and apologised” in the dressing room after their 2-1 defeat away at Istanbul Basaksehir on Wednesday night.

United bounced back from back-to-back losses against Istanbul and Arsenal in a 3-1 win away at Everton on Saturday, coming from behind to claim a crucial set of three points at Goodison Park.

The likes of Maguire and Victor Lindelof produced a solid defensive display on Merseyside after a horror display out in Turkey, which saw Demba Ba open the scoring for Istanbul by running clean through on goal from the halfway line.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer branded his team’s defending for the opening goal “unforgivable” – and Maguire says the players responsible apologised afterwards,

The United captain told BT Sport after their win at Everton: “We knew we had to get three points today. It's early in the season and we don't look at the table but the points we have accumulated isn't good enough for this club.

“It's important to bounce back from setbacks. We did it at Newcastle. We started the game really well but conceded a disappointing goal from a long, direct ball and we should have had better cover.

“We've been questioned but we know we don't answer them in 90 minutes, we answer them day in, day out.

“The lads are working tirelessly for this club, everyone wants to improve and do better. The manager has to pull the lads off the training ground.

“I think we know the first goal in Istanbul can't happen. We went away to Turkey and knew it would be tough game.
