Georginio Wijnaldum gave a cagey response when asked if he was going to sign a contract question with Liverpool.
Reds fans feared the Holland midfielder was set to leave in the summer, with Barcelona boss Ronald Koeman believed to be keen on taking his compatriot to the Nou Camp.
Wijnaldum's contract with Liverpool expires at the end of this season, and the 30-year-old is yet to commit to a new deal.
Reds boss Jurgen Klopp has previously appeared relaxed about the situation, and the hope at Anfield is that Wijnaldum will sign an extension.
But when asked about the situation while on international duty with Holland, Wijnaldum was giving nothing away.
"I can’t say anything about that,” the midfielder told Het Parool, cited by Sport Witness.
“Just ask Liverpool those questions. Don’t they answer?
“I cannot say anything about it, including whether or not there is talk of a new contract between me and Liverpool. Sorry.”
Wijnaldum's response will cause further worry that he is set to be reunited with Koeman, who was previously his national team coach.
But if he does leave Anfield at the end of this season, he will no doubt be determined to go out on top by helping Liverpool defend their Premier League title.
The Reds are currently third after being held to a 1-1 draw by Manchester City on Sunday.
And Wijnadum said: “We knew we might not be at the top after this weekend – going to Manchester City is just a tough game.
“But take it from me: we are just as eager at Liverpool, you know. The group wants more, and the manager is still pushing us.”
Wijnaldum was also asked about his club and country team-mate Virgil van Dijk, who could miss the rest of the season after suffering a knee ligament injury.
“It’s a pity that Virgil van Dijk isn’t there because of that knee injury,” Wijnaldum added.
“I talk to him often, but never about soccer. I do talk about life. So also not whether or not he will make it to the European Championships.
“He just has to rehabilitate and be there for his family. And God willing, he will be there next summer. Yes, he is still involved with the team, even though he is not physically here.”
