Fans think Newcastle should be relegated for awful defending vs Man City

Premier League fans have slammed Newcastle’s performance against Manchester City by saying they “should be relegated” for their dreadful defending.

Newcastle faced reigning Premier League champions City who are capable of making even the best defence appear average when in full flow.

But the Magpies made it even easier for Pep Guardiola’s side with some calamitous errors at the back in the lead up to Man City’s opening two goals.

The first goal came courtesy of a mix-up between Ciaran Clark and Martin Dubravka in the opening five minutes where Clark and the goalkeeper both left the ball when it was crossed in, gifting Ruben Dias with a free header.

Things got even worse for the home side before half-time as Joao Cancelo was allowed to skip past several Newcastle players through the midfield without so much as a challenge.

The Portuguese defender then punished Eddie Howe’s side by firing a goal of the season contender past Dubravka.

And fans were left dumbfounded at the woeful defending by a club which is hoping to avoid relegation after a recent £300million takeover.

One fan took to Twitter to say: “That is shambolic defending from Newcastle! That would get you relegated from League Two never mind the Premier League!”

Another added: “Newcastle should be relegated just for that piece of defending alone.”

That was reiterated by a third stunned fan, who said: “Newcastle deserve to be relegated just for that defending my god.”

Newcastle’s 4-0 defeat leaves them second from bottom in the league, having played one more match than 20th-placed Norwich.

The Magpies have the worst defensive record in the league with a staggering 41 goals conceded before the halfway point of the season.
