Evra says Giroud's 'only problem is his name', heaping praise on star

‘If he was called Giroudinho people would like him’: Patrice Evra claims Olivier Giroud’s ‘only problem is his name’ and insists Frenchman is Chelsea’s BEST striker

  • Olivier Giroud earned his first Premier League start of the season against Leeds
  • Frank Lampard had no option after the Frenchman’s four-goal exploits at Sevilla
  • Giroud has been behind Timo Werner and Tammy Abraham in the pecking order
  • Patrice Evra insists the striker is judged harshly and is the Blues’ best striker

Olivier Giroud would be better liked if his name was ‘Giroudinho’, Patrice Evra has claimed, insisting the prolific Frenchman is Chelsea’s best striking option.

The 34-year-old pulled-off a statement performance on Wednesday, netting a perfect hat-trick amongst the four goals he put past Sevilla in the Champions League.

Giroud has been a distant third in Frank Lampard’s striking pecking-order so far this season, with Timo Werner and Tammy Abraham firmly ahead. The veteran was strongly linked for a transfer in the summer and again for the upcoming January window, but he could now be infiltrating Lampard’s plans again.

Olivier Giroud’s four-goal masterclass against Sevilla has placed him back in Chelsea’s plans

The Frenchman has often received harsh criticism but has made another fightback this week

The Blues boss had little option but to reward Giroud with his first Premier League start of the season against Leeds on Saturday, with the star quickly proving his worth once more with a first-half goal from close-range.

‘I think Giroud’s only problem is his name,’ Patrice Evra said on punditry duties for Sky Sports.

‘If his name is Giroudinho or something people would like him. For me he’s the most complete striker Chelsea have and I don’t understand, because even in the French national team people always question his style.

Patrice Evra has claimed the striker is Chelsea’s best option in attack and should start more

‘Even when he was at Arsenal, he’s always facing criticism. He always rises to the challenge and that’s what I love about Olivier.

‘If I had him as a manager he would play in my team, 100 per cent.

‘Every season we’re going to hear about a Giroud transfer saga but he’s the best striker Chelsea have right now.’

Giroud had played only 47 minutes of top-flight football before kick-off at Stamford Bridge on Saturday. His one-man demolition of Sevilla was his second start of 2020-21, after the shoot-out defeat to Spurs in the Carabao Cup.

Giroud’s form has injected some heat into the battle to be Lampard’s first-choice in attack

He certainly wasn’t lacking sharpness in Spain though, with a cool left-foot curler, classy right-foot dink, trademark flicked header and a no-nonsense spot-kick putting his experience and talent on full show.

Despite being written-off repeatedly, Giroud has had a sensational career and is still Didier Deschamps’ preferred option to start up-front for France.

‘There is two options when you are facing the wall,’ the forward said ahead of his Leeds start.

‘You can give up and be moody but that’s not me, so I try to always fight to come back in the team.’
