Everton may have lost their director of football Marcel Brands earlier in December but that hasn’t stopped them being linked with new players in time for the January window. With manager Rafa Benitez set to take control of incomings, Express Sport takes a look at what could happen at Goodison Park next month.

Vitaliy Mykolenko deal ‘agreed’

Left-back was arguably the position that Everton needed least at the start of the season, such is Lucas Digne’s excellence.

The French defender has been a mainstay in the Toffees’ side ever since his transfer from Barcelona in 2018.

But after rumours of a bust-up with Benitez, he has been shunted from the squad, with Dynamo Kyiv starlet Vitaliy Mykolenko set to be his replacement.

Express Sport reported earlier this month that a deal is on the verge of being completed for a fee of just under £20million.

And the 22-year-old is likely to join on January 1, although Digne’s exit is also set to be around that time period, which will somewhat undermine the smart move for the Ukrainian prodigy.

Coutinho to return to Merseyside?

Few could have envisaged Philippe Coutinho having a Barcelona career as poor as the one he has had to endure following his £114million move from Liverpool in January 2018.

Yet with just 17 goals in a measly 76 La Liga appearances spread across four years, the Brazilian is now surplus to requirements at the Nou Camp.

Everton have been linked with a move to revitalise his career as per Mundo Deportivo, alongside the interests of Liverpool and Newcastle.

But with the silky star likely to be a peripheral figure at Anfield and unlikely to join the relegation woes that cloud St James’ Park, Everton could be his best choice.

Third time lucky for Rangers prodigy Patterson

Everton’s right-back woes this season have been a huge talking point in terms of the long-term progression of the club.

Seamus Coleman – through no fault of his own – has yet to be replaced despite reaching the age of 33, and his poor performances have shown a lack of forward planning at the club.

But with that in mind, a report by the Guardian has continued to link Rangers right-back Nathan Patterson with a move to the blue half of Merseyside, after two bids were made in the summer window before being swiftly rejected.

Having established himself in the Scotland national team, an offer over £10m is said to be required before Rangers will even consider talks.

Cut-price deal gives Benitez buzz for Bees star

Brentford defender and ex-Leeds captain Pontus Jansson could also be in line for a move to Goodison Park, claims sports journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The Swede moved to west London in 2019 after three successful years at Leeds United, winning promotion to the Premier League.

However, with his contract up at the end of the season, a report by the Guardian claims that Leicester, Newcastle and Everton are interested in his services.

With an injury-prone Yerry Mina and an out-of-sorts Mason Holgate still at the club, Jansson could offer a much-needed experience at the back to fire Everton up the table next season.
