Emile Smith Rowe perfectly sums up what Mikel Arteta has been missing at Arsenal

Emile Smith Rowe perfectly encapsulates what has been missing at Arsenal for Mikel Arteta this season.

The Gunners won consecutive matches in the Premier League on Tuesday for the first time this campaign since their opening two fixtures.

It came about after a 1-0 win over Brighton at the Amex Stadium, following up from their 3-1 win over Chelsea on Boxing Day.

On both occasions, Arteta played his young talents Smith Rowe, Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli.

And is has paid off with the three wonderkids showcasing their talents and putting their experienced counterparts to shame.

For whatever reason, the likes of Willian, Nicolas Pepe and Dani Ceballos were dropped – as were Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette for either match.

But Arsenal fans will be beaming to hear Smith Rowe following the match against Brighton after he admitted it is a dream come true to play for the Gunners.

“I’ve really enjoyed it,” he said.

“It’s a dream for me to play for this club. I’m so happy and grateful that the manager’s shown faith in me and given me the chance.

“I’ve just got to keep training hard, and then when I get the opportunity I’ve got to take it.”

On the game itself, he said: “Mikel told us the game would open up in the second half so we just tried to keep the belief, the confidence and you could see we started to create more chances.

“Laca got the goal that helped us.”

That spirit is exactly what Arteta needs at the Emirates right now and was a major part of his initial success when he joined this time last year.

The Spaniard has lost his way a bit this campaign and, perhaps, has given too much trust to his experienced players.

But they are the ones letting him down at the moment and amid reports that there are problems in the dressing room, Arteta still has allies with the younger cohort of the squad.
