RB Leipzig have completed the signing of highly-rated youngster Dominic Szoboszlai.
The Hungarian star joins the German side from sister club Red Bull Salzburg in an initial £18million deal.
Salzburg will also be due 20 percent of any future transfer, for a player whom they have nurtured since joining in January 2018, scoring 25 goals in 79 appearances for the club.
Szoboszlai had been monitored by Arsenal ahead of a potential January transfer.
A host of Europe’s elite, including AC Milan and Real Madrid, had also been keeping track of his process.
Mikel Arteta and Arsenal sporting director Edu had earmarked Szoboszlai, last year’s Austrian Bundesliga Player of the Season, as a possible midfield, as they sought to add more creativity and goalscoring prowess from the centre of the park.
The Gunners had explored ways of financing a January deal, keen to break up a £23million release clause with the Austrian side.
However, they ultimately didn’t make a move for the 20-year-old midfielder, who has now joined RBL for a lesser up-front figure, putting pen-to-paper on a long-term deal until 2025, with the Bundesliga title contenders.
He will wear the No.17 shirt and be eligible to take on Liverpool in the Champions League last 16 in February.
RBL CEO Oliver Mintzlaff said: "With the signing of Dominik Szoboszlai we can strengthen our squad even more.
"With the transfer surplus in the summer and reaching the round of 16 in the Champions League, we generated additional income in order to be able to carry out a transfer of this magnitude even in this financially difficult time.
"It was important to us to invest this additional income directly back into the team. With Dominik Szoboszlai, our squad is now even broader and gets additional quality."
Szoboszlai declared: “I am very happy that the move to RB Leipzig worked out. The club has made great progress, is one of the best teams in the Bundesliga and is also causing a sensation in the Champions League.
"The move to Leipzig is perfect for my development, because I come to a top coach and an incredibly ambitious team that is very young, but has already gained a lot of experience and was able to celebrate some successes.
"I will be able to develop myself further here and of course I would like to help ensure that the club remains so successful in 2021."
Szoboszlai will be eligible to make his RBL debut on January 9, when they face Borussia Dortmund.
