Crooks doubles down on ‘selfish’ Salah analysis after Team of the Year snub

Garth Crooks has reaffirmed his stance on 'selfish' Mohamed Salah having previously snubbed the Liverpool star striker for his Premier League Team of the Year for 2021.

The Egyptian netted his 16th Premier League goal of the current campaign in the Reds' 2-2 draw with fellow title-chasers Chelsea on Sunday.

Another stellar performance saw the forward make the cut for Crooks' renowned Team of the Week alongside fellow Anfield ally Sadio Mane, who was also on the scoresheet in the Stamford Bridge stalemate.

However, during his justification of Salah's selection, the BBC pundit made a point of hitting back at the haters who questioned his recent end-of-year snub due to the Liverpool sensation's perceived 'selfishness'.

"I heard my non-selection of Mohamed Salah in my team of the year got one or two a little hot under the collar," Crooks noted in this week's BBC Team of the Week. "Well, I make no apologies for that.

"Salah made my team of the season but crudely chased the Golden Boot award.

"His selfishness had a negative effect on Sadio Mane in particular and, in my view, had an adverse effect on Liverpool's campaign last season – a point I made at the time."

The 29-year-old was narrowly pipped to the Premier League's prestigious Golden Boot by Tottenham's Harry Kane last season as the Reds scrambled to a final-day fourth-placed finish despite Salah's 22 league strikes.

In spite of Crooks' staunch defence of his recent decision to overlook the record-breaking winger, whose strike against former club Chelsea brought his tally to 23 in all competitions for this season, the pundit was full of praise for Salah this time around.

"This season, Salah looks like a team player again and his goals are coming naturally," Crooks added.

"He is no longer looking for cheap penalties and is back to the player he was the season Liverpool won the title, and that's why he makes my team of the week."
