Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are two giants of the game, whose careers will transcend sport for eternity.

Both players have dominated the world stage; winning 11 of the last 12 Ballon D’Ors. Only Luka Modric has been able to break the vice like grip both players have had on the award.

Despite both players being well into their primes, they both continue to set the bar at the highest level with their performances, goals, and leadership.

They truly are giants of the game, but perhaps not to Cristiano Ronaldo Jr.

Ronaldo’s young son met Messi during the Ballon D’Or ceremony in 2017, and Ronaldo’s mother Dolores Aveiro has opened on the exchange.

"I was with him (Ronaldo Jr) and I said, 'look, it's Messi,' and he replied, 'that's not Messi, he's short," she recalled.

"Then my son encouraged him to wave. Messi is a very good person. My grandson is already taller than him, [laughs] it was a very fun moment."

Messi’s evening did not get much better as Ronaldo also went on to win his fifth Ballon D’Or.

However, that was the last time Ronaldo won the award, with Modric and Messi winning the next two, while the competition was cancelled in 2020 due to the Coronavirus outbreak.

Aveiro has also opened on her personal wishes on Ronaldo to one day return to Sporting Lisbon. .

"Ronaldo has to come back here, he'd be here for me,” Averiro said on the Sporting Clube de Portugal podcast,

“He likes to watch Sporting games, I told him, 'son, before I die I want to see you back at Sporting," she confessed.

Ronaldo left home to join Manchester United from Sporting Lisbon when he was only 18 years old.

18 years later, he has returned to Old Trafford where he has already scored four goals in his first three appearances.

Messi on the other hand is yet to find the net at Paris Saint-Germain and is currently on the side-lines nursing a knee injury.
