Cristiano Ronaldo will not feature in the Premier League clash between Manchester United and Liverpool on Tuesday evening as he and partner Georgina Rodriguez mourn the tragic passing of their baby son.
Ronaldo's United team-mates will travel to Anfield less than 24 hours after he and Rodriguez announced the birth of a baby daughter and passing of a twin son having revealed the pregnancy back in October.
The club have announced that their 37-year-old star striker will understandably not be playing any part in their domestic fixture after asking for privacy in the moment of loss for himself and his loved ones.
The club said in a statement: "Family is more important than everything + Ronaldo is supporting his loved ones at this immensely difficult time.
"As such, we confirm he will not feature in the match against Liverpool at Anfield and we underline the family's request for privacy."
After the official Liverpool Twitter account had posted the message: "All of us here at Liverpool FC send our deepest condolences to you, Georgina and the family."
The update comes after Liverpool fans tried to spread the word about a seventh minute clap for Ronaldo's loss during the fixture as they put their bitter rivalry to one side.
One fan wrote: "I think our fans could show a bit of class tomorrow and show our support for Cristiano and his partner after losing their son.
"A minute's applause on the 7th minute Reds? Show other fans what true compassion is. Rivalries mean nothing at times like this."
Ronaldo rejoined United in the summer from Juventus and has gone on to score 21 goals in all competitions despite a difficult campaign under Ralf Rangnick.
The Portugal icon added another three goals to his Premier League tally in their win over Norwich last time out, having done the same in his previous home match against Tottenham.
Before the announcement, Ronaldo's partner Georgina Rodriquez was seen enjoying a family barbecue with her sister Ivana in Manchester.
Ivana's boyfriend Carlos Garcia, as well as Spanish journalist Edu Aguirre were also thought to be at the gathering that took place 24 hours prior to the tragedy.
A joint statement signed by the couple then read: "It is with our deepest sadness we have to announce that our baby boy has passed away. It is the greatest pain that any parents can feel.
"Only the birth of our baby girl gives us the strength to live this moment with some hope and happiness.
"We would like to thank the doctors and nurses for all their expert care and support. We are all devastated at this loss and we kindly ask for privacy at this very difficult time.
"Our baby boy, you are our angel. We will always love you."
