Chelsea pursued Haaland before landing Lukaku

Chelsea tried to ‘repair their relationship’ with Mino Raiola in an attempt to sign Erling Haaland – and did not even negotiate to try and buy Robert Lewandowski despite player interest – before landing £98m man Romelu Lukaku

  • Chelsea completed the signing of Romelu Lukaku for £98m on Thursday night
  • The Belgian rejoins the club from Inter Milan seven years after leaving
  • The Blues were interested in buying Erling Haaland but a deal never materialised
  • Robert Lewandowski was offered by his agent but Bayern did not want to sell
  • Lukaku was originally on Thomas Tuchel’s shortlist and Chelsea have their man

Chelsea have landed £98m man Romelu Lukaku but that was not before casting their eyes elsewhere with Erling Haaland their No 1 target this summer.

The Borussia Dortmund forward was of high interest to the Champions League winners yet with the German club unwilling to sell this summer, a deal never materialised.

As told in The Athletic, Chelsea were keen on the 21-year-old – and were offered Robert Lewandowski by his agent – before landing on Lukaku, who was also an option from the start as Thomas Tuchel looked to strengthen up front.

The report details how Haaland was a target even before Tuchel took charge in January, with Blues officials looking to ‘repair their relationship’ with the Norwegian’s agent Mino Raiola in order to make a deal more likely.

Yet Dortmund did not want to play ball, keen to keep their star asset particularly since Jadon Sancho eventually left this summer for Manchester United, with Haaland also not agitating for a transfer away this summer.

Then, Bayern forward Lewandowski was also mooted as a possible target, but Bayern Munich were also unwilling to come to the negotiation table.

Club officials never made an attempt to sign the Poland captain, despite his agenet Pini Zahavi raising the possibility of a move.

As such, Chelsea turned their attention to Lukaku – who was on Tuchel’s striker shortlist back in the spring – and landed their man after the Belgian couldn’t resist returning to Stamford Bridge.

After completing his return, Lukaku told Chelsea’s website: ‘I’m happy and blessed to be back at this wonderful club.

‘It’s been a long journey for me: I came here as a kid who had a lot to learn, now I’m coming back with a lot of experience and more mature.

‘The relationship I have with this club means so much to me, as you know. I have supported Chelsea as a kid and now to be back and try to help them win more titles is an amazing feeling.

‘The way the club is going fits my ambitions perfectly at 28 and just coming off winning Serie A. I think this opportunity comes at the right time and hopefully we can have a lot of success together
