Chelsea fans fume at "clueless" Gary Neville for verdict on Tammy Abraham injury

Gary Neville claimed Tammy Abraham would have won a penalty early on in Chelsea’s win over Newcastle if he didn’t make an “unnatural movement” to try and earn contact from Jamaal Lascelles – leaving the Blues faithful furious on social media.

Thomas Tuchel’s men beat the Magpies 2-0 on Monday night to record their fourth straight Premier League victory, with goals from Olivier Giroud and Timo Werner handing them another set of three points under the new head coach.

Giroud opened the scoring after 31 minutes at Stamford Bridge despite initially starting on the bench, having replaced an injured Abraham 10 minutes earlier.

The latter was forced off after shipping a heavy challenge from Lascelles as he raced through on goal inside the box, which appeared to damage his right ankle.

Abraham felt he should have had a penalty, but after consulting the pitch-side VAR monitor referee Peter Bankes decided his original decision to not award the foul was the correct one.

Neville agreed with the official’s call on the night, explaining on Sky Sports how Abraham cost himself a penalty and a potential goal by looking for the contact.

“We talked about it years ago on this show, about players taking that unnatural movement across the line,” the pundit said.

“He’s just literally gone across because he wants that kick on him. If he just goes and plays the ball, I think he either wins the penalty or scores a goal.

Neville’s analysis did not go down well with Chelsea fans, nevertheless, who were quick to brand him “clueless” on Twitter.

One wrote: “GARY NEVILLE CLAIMING TAMMY TRIED TO GET CONTACT FOR A PENALTY… sorry what? He tried to shield the ball and got fouled, someone please show him Bruno's show reel.”

Another said: “That Neville analysis of the pen was insane. Said that it had all the makings of a penalty, but because Tammy planted his foot to the right rather than straight ahead that means it's not a pen because he's trying to win the foul? Clueless”.

While one simply put: “Gary neville talking through his backside again about tammy”.
