Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez says Ryan Garcia ‘should have got up’ following the body shot that ended his fight against Gervonta Davis.
Garcia and Davis collided in Las Vegas in April in one of the biggest fights of the year with the latter extending his unbeaten run with a stoppage win, leading to many christening him the new face of boxing.
‘King Ry’ started strongly but was countered beautifully by Davis in the second round, dropped to the mat for just the second time in his career.
The Baltimore fighter ended the contest in the seventh, dropping Garcia with a body shot that left him unable to meet the referee’s count as he suffered the first defeat of his career..
Fellow professional fighters, fans and pundits and debated ever since whether Garcia was able to get back to his feet.
Canelo, a former stablemate of Garcia’s having both worked under Eddy Reynoso until last year, is among those who felt the 24-year-old quit on the night.
He told Fight Hype: ‘It was a good fight, I thought it was going to be a little more action, but Gervonta is too good.
‘Body shots hurt a lot, but you know we are fighters we need to get up.’
While Garcia has been humble in defeat, hailing Davis as the better man on the night, there was more controversy after the California fighter claimed there was a ‘mole’ in his training camp leading up to the fight, passing information to the opposition.
‘Actually sad I had a mole in my camp. Like wtf that’s crazy but thank god it’s brought to light now,’ Garcia wrote on Instagram.
Garcia then followed that with the message: ‘Also didn’t mean that to come off as an excuse or anything.
‘I lost, period. I’ll come back but I’m just shocked that part of my team crossed me, someone close to me.
‘But it’s a testimony that you must be aware of anyone.’
