Borussia Dortmund have reportedly earmarked Dutch star Memphis Depay as a potential replacement for Jadon Sancho if he leaves this summer.
The future of Sancho is set to dominate the summer with Manchester United the frontrunners to sign the England star.
Dortmund are in a strong position in that they can command a high fee for Sancho and are happy to keep him if a move fails to materialise.
United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has made clear to executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward that he wants Sancho this summer and the expectation is that he will join the ranks at Old Trafford.
The Independent claims Dortmund are prepared to accept an initial £60million, which would likely rise to around £100m in add-ons.
Should United get their man, Dortmund will have plenty of money to splash on a replacement.
And according to German publication Bild, the Bundesliga side have set their sights on Lyon’s Depay.
The attacker moved to Lyon in 2017 after an 18-month spell at United where he scored just seven goals in 53 appearances.
But with the Ligue 1 side, Depay has rediscovered the quality that attracted United to him and he scored 14 goals in 18 appearances last season before suffering a serious knee injury.
Depay has now regained full fitness but has just one year left on his contract and could be attempted to make another move.
Meanwhile, United hero Gary Neville believes Solskjaer may need as many as five new players if they want to challenge for the Premier League title next season.
“I don’t think this Manchester United team at this moment can challenge for the title next season,” he told Sky Sports.
“It needs more additions and more of the right additions. I think that Ole needs three or four more of those as a minimum before he can even think about getting up into third or second place.
“My concern isn’t really for the front three or the midfield three, it’s the depth and the drop that you have beneath that talent.
“When I say that Manchester United need a centre-forward, that’s not me saying they should sell Anthony Martial. They need a centre-forward because Manchester United should have two or three great centre-forwards.
“They should have two or three great wingers. Not just one in each position.”
“The first XI is ok but the squad needs four or five more. The last time Manchester United finished in the top three was under Jose Mourinho and they spent £170m that summer.
“United need to invest money again but do it correctly this time. The squad needs improving, the team needs improving. First and foremost, they need to improve the first eleven.”
