Benjamin Pavard to miss Bayern Munich’s Champions League tie with Lazio next week after testing positive for coronavirus but club confirm French defender is ‘doing well’

  • Bayern Munich’s Benjamin Pavard will miss his side’s match with Lazio next week
  • The defender tested positive for coronavirus this week and is now self-isolating
  • Thomas Muller, Leon Goretzka and Javi Martinez have all tested positive recently
  • Pavard will also miss Saturday’s German league match with Eintracht Frankfurt

Benjamin Pavard will miss Bayern Munich’s Champions League tie with Lazio next week after testing positive for coronavirus.

The French defender will undergo a period of self-isolation as per the Bundesliga rules meaning Pavard will also miss Saturday’s league tie with Eintracht Frankfurt.

The 24-year-old could also miss Bayern’s home league game against Koln on February 27, depending on what day he received his positive test this week.

Pavard has tested positive for the virus and will undergo a 10-day period of self-isolation

In a club statement, Bayern revealed that Pavard is ‘in good health’ during his period of self-isolation.

The news is a blow for the German and European champions, who are sweating over Thomas Muller’s availability for the Lazio game due to similar reasons.

Muller tested positive for the virus just one day before Bayern’s Club World Cup victory over Tigres in Qatar and had to travel home on an ‘aircraft ambulance’ in full isolation.

Bayern duo Javi Martinez and Leon Goretzka contracted coronavirus last month and are yet to return for the Bundesliga side but the pair are back in training after missing the club’s 3-3 draw with Arminia Bielefeld earlier this week.

The German giants’ squad is already stretched as Bayern named just eight substitutes for the visit of Arminia on Monday rather than the nine allowed – with the majority of those replacements being youth team players.

Pavard has been an important part of the Champions League holders’ squad this season, making 24 appearances in all competitions.

Bayern take on Lazio later this month looking to regain their European crown, while they also lead the Bundesliga table by five points.

However, last season’s treble winners will not repeat the same feat this time as they exited the German Cup in dramatic fashion to second-tier side Holsten Kiel on penalties.
