Barcelona are reportedly plotting a shock swoop for PSG superstar Kylian Mbappe. The precocious Frenchman was the subject of intense links to bitter rivals Real Madrid during the summer, while the Catalan side were floundering amid financial chaos which effectively forced the untimely exit of club legend Lionel Messi.

Due to an embarrassment of riches at the Parc des Princes, Mbappe’s PSG side are already running away in Ligue 1, sitting nine points clear after ten games.

Deep into the final year of his contract, there remains plenty of speculation on where he will be playing his football next season.

A monster bid from Madrid was rejected during the summer, and it has since seemed a matter of time before the 22-year-old heads to the Bernabeu.

In a shock turn of events, however, AS claim that Barcelona are planning to nab Mbappe off Madrid’s toes.

Financial trouble marred Barca’s summer, forcing them to shift both Messi and Antoine Griezmann off the wage bill to grant the club some breathing room.

On the verge of bankruptcy and in £1billion worth of debt, planning to acquire such an expensive talent will undoubtedly raise a few eyebrows.

Granted, Mbappe’s contract situation means he will soon be available for free, but a sizable signing-on bonus is expected to play a pivotal role in the deal.

The same report states that Barca are planning to one-up Los Blancos by proposing a mammoth £75million bonus, while Madrid were supposedly only proposing around £40m.

Club icon Messi must be feeling perplexed amid this speculation, given it was a fundamental lack of money which forced his tearful exit from the Camp Nou.

Furthermore, snapping up Mbappe would steal away one of his most talented PSG team-mates.

Things are likely to kick into gear in January, when the player will be at liberty to negotiate pre-contract arrangements with other clubs ahead of a free summer move.

Super-agent Pini Zahavi is expected to play a crucial part in the prospective deal, and therein lies another advantage which Barca could exploit.

Zahavi also brokered Neymar’s blockbuster move from Barcelona to Paris in 2017, so already has a history working with the two sides.

Such a development certainly does not put Madrid out of the running, with Mbappe’s rumoured preference being a switch to the Spanish capital.

However, such a signing-on fee could turn the tide, and the exemplary form of Karim Benzema at Madrid could prompt concern around the Frenchman’s prospective game time.

With six goals notched so far this season, it has been a relatively slow start for Mbappe, but speculation around him is almost certain to speed up when January rolls around.
