Barcelona have renewed Samuel Umtiti on a long-term contract, finally allowing them to register new signing Ferran Torres. The forward had completed a £55million move from Manchester City, but was not able to be registered due to financial issues.

Barcelona have finally been given the go-ahead to register January signing Torres after Umtiti’s pay-cut.

The Blaugrana has ‘increased its financial fair play quota’ by handing Umtiti a new deal until 2026, having been out of contract next summer.

Barcelona will pay the France international what he was owed over the next 18 months over the course of the new four-and-a-half year deal, freeing up enough wage budget to register Torres.

A statement from the club read: “FC Barcelona and first team player Samuel Umtiti have reached an agreement to extend the latter’s contract until 30 June 2026.

“The French defender is reducing a part of the salary that he was due to receive in the year and a half remaining on his contract.

“This contract extension operation does not entail any greater financial commitments for FC Barcelona with regard to the player.

“FC Barcelona wishes to publicly express its gratitude to Samuel Umtiti for his willingness and the affection that he has demonstrated towards the club. Through this contract extension, FC Barcelona will be able to increase its ‘financial fair play’ quota and thus register Ferran Torres with the Spanish Professional Football League.”

Umtiti had been linked with a move to Newcastle this month, but it looks as though he will stay on as a member of Xavi’s first-team, alongside Torres.

The Spain international could now make his debut against Real Madrid on Wednesday in the Spanish Super Cup semi-finals.

The mini-tournament is being held in Saudi Arabian capital Riyadh this week, with Atletico Madrid and Athletic Bilbao also taking part.

Meanwhile, Barca are understood to have made an offer for Wolves winger Adama Traore, with Tottenham also keen.

According to Spanish outlet Sport, LaLiga side Barca plan to gazump Spurs by offering Wolves an enticing player-exchange offer for Traore, who spent some of his youth career at the Nou Camp.

The Catalan outfit will incredibly offer Ousmane Dembele to the Midlands side if the winger refuses to sign a new contract.

Dembele, who was once a £130m arrival at Barca, is out of contract in June and talks over a new deal are believed to have stalled.
