Ashley Cole and Graeme Souness agree over Frank Lampard’s first name on Chelsea team-sheet

Chelsea legend Ashley Cole and Graeme Souness both came to an agreement that Mason Mount was the first name on the teamsheet at Chelsea. It came after another fine display from the England international against Sheffield United. Frank Lampard sees Mount as an important cog in his tactical machine.

Chelsea emerged 4-1 winners over Sheffield United in the Premier League at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

It encapsulates a brilliant run of form after a rocky start to propel them into potential Premier League title contenders.

Since their loss to Tottenham on penalties in the Carabao Cup, the Blues have gone on an eight-match unbeaten streak.

That includes six clean sheets and six games where they scored three or more goals.

It seems that everything is starting to click for Lampard’s men at the right time following a summer spree where over £200m was spent.

But one ever-present that did not cost a penny has been Mount – who came up through the club’s academy.

The Englishman has been an embodiment of Lampard’s tactics, full of energy, high-pressing and dynamism blended with attacking talent.

And though he did not get on the scoresheet against Sheffield United, his impact from midfield did not go unnoticed.

“Frank has a dilemma but it’s a good dilemma,” Cole told Sky Sports after the game.

“[Christian] Pulisic at the back end of last season was on fire and everyone was like, ‘Wow look what this kid can produce’.

“He was the star of the team at the time.

“But now with so many attacking options it will be difficult at times when everyone is fit.

“I love having Mason in midfield I think he brings energy, the quality and freedom for other players to thrive.”

Souness added: “Because he’s homegrown they’re overlooked and taking them for granted. Mason Mount is a fabulous player.

“I think he’d be the first name on my team sheet in midfield. We talked about Ziyech but the challenge for him is to see if he can do it against the best teams.

“We know Mason Mount can, we know he’s right up for the cup.”
