Arsenal are eyeing a move for Brazilian goalkeeper Neto, who has been told that he is surplus to requirements at Barcelona – but they could find themselves priced out of the market.
Neto, 30, who has one international cap, moved to the Catalan giants last summer but has only made four appearances in all competitions as Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s deputy.
Chelsea have also enquired about the former Valencia stopper, but they could pull out if given the green light to sign Ajax’s Andre Onana.
The Dutch giants are also looking at Neto as a potential replacement for Onana, who has made it clear that he wants to move to the Premier League this summer.
Barcelona won’t have any problems selling Neto with Sevilla, Atletico Madrid, Real Betis and AC Milan all interested too.
That could force the asking price much higher than Arsenal want to spend as they look to squeeze fees and wages.
Arsenal’s current back-up keeper Emiliano Martinez is not out of contract until 2022 having made 11 first-team appearances this season.
But Neto is being eyed as a higher-class back-up to Bernd Leno, who has been brilliant this season for the north London club.
Despite only keeping eight clean sheets in 30 games, Germany international Leno has made a succession of impressive saves throughout the campaign.
- Emery ‘felt alone’ at Arsenal – Failed Gunners boss makes Wenger claim
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta, meanwhile, has made it clear he will only sign players who do not need to be swayed about a move to the Emirates.
The Spaniard said recently: “Everybody wants to come here and we have a really clear idea of what we are.
“It doesn’t need much convincing and if they do, for me it’s not a good starting point.
“If I have to convince a player to stay or to join us. To Arsenal? It holds me back a little bit.
“It has to be ‘what do we have to do? I want to play for that club and represent exactly the values the style of play that I want’.
“That’s the kind of emotion I want to hear at the start.
“The same with the players that are here.
“Once you finish what are the feelings you have towards the club? That’s what really interests me.”
Arteta is also thought to be keen to strengthen in central defence and in midfield, though he has limited funds to work with.
