Arsenal are linked with a January move for Barcelona flop Philippe Coutinho. Reports from Spain are claiming the former Liverpool star is keen on a move to the Emirates as he looks to end his Nou Camp nightmare. But Arsenal must not be sucked in by the Brazilian.

Coutinho joined Barca in January 2018 for a fee that could rise to £142million.

However, his career in La Liga has failed to get off the ground.

He spent his second full season at Barca on loan at Bayern Munich.

But the attacking midfielder did not do enough in the Bundesliga to convince Bayern to sign him on a permanent basis.

Coutinho has also struggled with injury problems throughout his time in Spain.

The 29-year-old had featured just 30 times in all competitions across the last two seasons.

Spanish outlet Sport claims Coutinho is keen on leaving Barca and that the Spanish giants would be open to letting him go next month.

The player’s agents are doing all they can to get him a move back to the Premier League.

Arsenal are their preferred destination, with Tottenham, Everton and Newcastle also on their radar.

But the Gunners have a simple decision to make if Coutinho’s camp do come knocking.

Mikel Arteta simply does not need Coutinho in his squad.

Arteta is just starting to get his group of youngsters playing at a high level as they sit just six points behind second-placed Liverpool.

Signing a 29-year-old who has had a string of injury problems on huge wages could turn out to be a disaster.

Arsenal also already have plenty of players in Coutinho’s position.

The Gunners’ player of the season so far, Emile Smith Rowe, cannot even get into Arteta’s starting XI currently.

Gabriel Martinelli has impressed so much on the left side of attack that Smith Rowe has not started any of the last five Premier League matches.

Coutinho could also play in a central attacking midfield role.

But summer signing Martin Odegaard is starting to come into his own at the Emirates and signing Coutinho would just stunt the Norwegian’s clear progress.

Arsenal also have the likes of Nicolas Pepe waiting in the wings for their chance.

Coutinho has scored two goals for Barca in La Liga this season but his lack of game time in recent years throws doubt over his capability to perform on a regular basis in the Premier League again.

Arsenal may have been sucked in by a player of his ability in the past but Edu and Arteta must be strong enough to reject any advances he and his representatives make.
